(4.)  In a departure from my practise of the past few seasons, I have stayed on in the South Island this winter.  Somehow, the south’s  sub-zero night time temperatures seemed more attractive than the big wet I experienced last year while hitchhiking in the north (refer Item 4 of  Newsletter No 11 — here)

While this decision has provided a challenge to both mind and gear, it has also gifted me opportunities every day to experience peoples’ kindness — without which, I would not survive

The experience has been humbling. Thank you!

(2.)  The police department’s independent investigator, Mr Bruce Squire QC,  wrote seeking clarification of points in the November  “Supplement”.   My formal response to his letter {Appendix I} is available on-line  here  

It appears the police department’s inquiry has run into an obstacle:  police administrators will not give their investigator the names of  my targets — without which, obviously, their inquiry is meaningless

Not to worry;  my rehabilitation process will not be affected by police administrators and I refer you to item (3) of the July 2008  Newsletter No 10

 (3.)  Mr Squire’s difficulty in obtaining information from government is no surprise to this writer.  Here is an update on my information requests, itemised at  (2)(i) – (iii)  in  Newsletter No 13

By that numbering:

(i)  no response from the  Prime Minister’s office  regarding Google

(ii)  no response from  Clerk of the House  regarding admissions of perjury by 50 former agents

(iii)  no response from  Commissioner of Police  regarding their report on admissions of perjury
         by those former agents’

These matters remain open . . .

(4.)  At time of drafting this Newsletter,  the  clock  read 392 days, 22 hours — plus minutes, seconds, and counting

(5.)  Readers who located that hidden door on my Web Site,  and took the time to look around my Parallel Universe, will have found the hitchhiking links, in particular that regarding my Zen or “minimalist” technique

Internationally, there is growing interest in my method and I have accepted a challenge to race right around the South Island in late summer.  An interesting prospect, given that  my opponent will be a young, attractive female from Germany — and,  I will give her a head start

Surprisingly, leastways for me, most commentators and observers are backing the girl to win

(6.)  The police department’s “independent” investigator wrote again following this renewed media interest.  You may follow my correspondence stream with Mr Bruce Squire QC.,  here

In his latest email, Mr Squire writes:

“. . . As you will appreciate, without that information  (edit – the names of my targets)  it is almost impossible to identify the persons who might have been affected by your claimed perjured evidence, to locate them and to pursue the inquiry in any meaningful way . . .”

(7.)  The road continues to provide and I am most grateful for the kind, practical support received on my journey around the country:  places to sleep, food, hot showers, laundry facilities, the list is endless.  Thank you! 

Stowing my thermal skins was premature, though.  The nights are still cool, even freezing in some areas, so they’ve been relocated to an easy-access-pocket on my pack

It has been a busy month with media meetings and long hours sitting at my keyboard working on background material – reflected in a relatively low mileage on October’s hitchhiking log

(2.) STEP-TWO (the second of five separate steps in this, my rehabilitation process) has commenced and involves locating the victims of my perjury — or, as I have come to call this part of the process, “seeking my targets”

Effectively, STEP-TWO began with my interview on Campbell Live and carries on with the development of my Web Blog, these {opt-in} newsletters and my postings on various Web Sites, Chat Rooms and Internet Forums

STEP-TWO will continue until I have located all my targets and I am using various, unorthodox methods to find them: for example . . .

(3.) People have spoken of my “bravery” in undertaking this process. I need to comment:

In my view brave people are those who, when facing a required course of action that fills them with fear, will carry on regardless. Bravery does not apply in my situation because I am not fearful of my process — and not because I’m fearless — but, because . . . well, simply because there is nothing to fear

Afford me your time to demonstrate:

On Christmas Eve 2007 a copy of my original confession was sent to the government and a question often asked of me — why haven’t you been arrested – remains unanswered

Here’s a clock that measures the days: tick~tock ~ tick~tock

(4.) Shortly after posting my previous update the icy storms abated . . . and . . . then came the rain(s)

Not to worry: tested by an R&D team in damp Fiordland valleys, my tent — for those who are interested in the technicalities of winter travel — is waterproofed to 3500 mm of hydrostatic head (British Standard 3424) and this kept me snug & dry at night

Hitchhiking in the rain is problematic, though. So, after teaching myself some new tricks, I became very skillful at catching rides without actually standing beside the road

But the rains continued, without stop, day after day, for weeks . . . and call me a wimp, but, when an old client invited me to the South Island for a photo-shoot, I was pleased to accept the ferry fare and escape the constant damp

I am not the first undercover police officer in New Zealand to confess to perjury (at last count I was number 20) and, on each of those previous occasions, and on carrying out an “independent” inquiry, the government’s response has been the same: “there is no evidence to support these claims” — or words to that affect

Therefore, while I am most willing to fully cooperate with the government’s current “independent” inquiry headed by Mr Bruce Squires QC of Wellington, my own rehabilitation process will arrive at its intended outcome, as was planned — and, irrespective of government

(4.) So, having completed STEP-ONE in my process, I recently crossed Cook Strait and am now travelling in the North Island

The snow followed me!

But not to worry: my gear is excellent and the kindness of strangers has had me well fed and sheltered from these winter storms that arrive, wave after wave (each worse than the last, it seems) plus a full length set of merino thermal skins — gifted by some kind soul — keep me snug and warm

Dear Mr O’Brien,

I understand that you have been advised by the New Zealand Police that I
have been appointed to inquire into the allegations made in your letters of
30 November 2007 and 22 January 2008 to the Chief Justice and the Registrar
of the High Court at Hamilton respectively.

My Terms of Reference require me to identify and clarify the allegations
made by you that whilst a Police Officer you told lies and tampered with
evidence to obtain convictions, to assess the implications and veracity of
those allegations, and to determine whether in any case there is a
reasonable basis to suspect criminal offending which would justify a formal
Police Investigation being initiated. At the conclusion of my Inquiry I am
required to provide the Commissioner of Police with a report.

I would like to begin the Inquiry as soon as possible within the framework
of my other commitments. In that connection I have a trial commencing on 7
April 2008 which I expect to last not less than six weeks, so that it is
unlikely I will be able to make any significant progress in this inquiry
until after that. However, it would be of assistance to me in defining the
parameters of my Inquiry if you could provide me with the following
information:

(i) The nature of the lies which you have indicated in the
correspondence previously referred to, you gave in evidence in the
particular cases you have identified.

(ii) If possible, the cases, perhaps by reference to the names of the
defendants, in which the lies were told. In that connection I note that you
refer to a ‘circuit court session’ presided over by Justice Beattie in the
Hamilton High Court in 1974. Is it the position that the lies you say were
told to the Court were confined to cases heard during that time.

If you would be good enough to provide me with the information I have
requested above, that will enable me to begin inquiries into the particular
cases with which I will be concerned, so that once the trial I have is
completed, some progress will have been made in expediting this inquiry.

I look forward to receiving your reply.
