Update No. 24 / ~ “Watching the Watchers”

News this week that the Government’s Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) has been spying illegally may have surprised some New Zealanders. It shouldn’t have, for, other than their target being Kim Dotcom, there is nothing particularly unique about this case — the New Zealand Government has been spying illegally on its own citizens for many years. I speak from experience . . . and here’s a recent post on my personal Blog about such things:

Watching the Watchers:

August 12, 2012 — “And so it was, that, in the 1970s, when the New Zealand Police first established covert surveillance squads to spy on its citizens, I was a member of that first team …”

And now the Government has promised us an “inquiry” into the matter . . .

April 10, 2013 — The Government’s promised review was released yesterday.
The Kitteridge Report. It makes a sobering read and I’ve posted a selection of
references, Links, editorials and commentaries, to my Wall at Google-Plus:

Watching the Spooks

May 15, 2013 — “Following news the Government’s GCSB has been illegally
spying on New Zealand citizens, I wrote to the Prime Minister’s office in April
2013 and asked — has the GCSB been spying on me? — to which I received a neither
confirm nor deny response, so I’m taking this up with the Privacy Commissioner:
